Sally's Insights - Work Smarter Not Harder
Think about what’s missing in your life – the things that will feed your soul.
After 25+ years in the creative industry, it’s only in the last few that I’ve truly realised, we are not saving lives.
By that I mean an unread email can wait until morning, the 7 AM text can wait until after your morning exercise, and the so-called Friday night emergency for Monday can sit over the weekend. If you can respond ASAP, do so but not while you’re enjoying an evening with friends or family.
A few years back, I realised something had to change. I had no time for personal development, I was getting home late most nights, and all I ever talked about was work. These days, I also prioritise space and time for myself. A few years ago, I took up pottery, and I love it. Two hours a week covered in clay—no phone, no meetings, just me and the clay (and, of course, the teacher trying to rein in my over-the-top creativity and refusal to follow the rules—what’s new?!).
Think about what’s missing in your life – the things that will feed your soul. The more we take the time to look after the creative or adventuring side of our lives the more we will have to offer at work. It’s the antidote to burnout.
Most of us have more flexibility now we can work from home, and it’s something we all truly appreciate. Having the option to structure our work environment in a way that suits us has made a huge difference to productivity and overall well-being.
It’s tempting to think our jobs, or our businesses can’t survive without us. Especially when your name is the business. When clients call The Brownbill Effect they want Brownbill. But here’s what I’ve learned- because people want me, they’re willing to wait until I’m available. Wish I’d figured that out years ago.
I still respond to emails and texts, and I still call people back, but not always immediately like I used to. I will get back within 24 hours, but at a time that works for me. And because of that, I now have a better work-life balance.
We can only squeeze so much into a day so it’s important to put yourself on the ‘to do list’. Preferably near the top. Managing expectations is key of course. Once everyone understands how you work, they will work around it. Especially if you always deliver.
Taking time out each week has made me healthier, mentally and physically stronger, and, interestingly, it’s only had a positive impact on my business.
I’ve built a business that I’m proud of and I’ve always loved what I do. Now I love it even more.
